Why Are People Using Charcoal Briquettes for Barbecue in South Africa?

South Africa has a rich tradition of barbecued food, with people often meeting their colleagues, peers, and friends to enjoy it, especially during the summer. As such gatherings usually take place during weekends, the consumption of charcoal briquettes accelerates on these days. This barbecue fuel is also being used for everyday cooking applications as it provides a caramelized exterior and smoky flavor to the food. Moreover, the low requirement for butter and oil while preparing barbecue food also boosts the usage of charcoal briquettes in the nation.

Additionally, the plunging cost of such cooking fuel will help the South African charcoal briquettes market advance at an 8.8% CAGR during the forecast period (2020–2030). According to P&S Intelligence, the market revenue stood at $136.0 million in 2019, and it is projected to reach $286.7 million by 2030. Charcoal briquettes are manufactured from small wood remnants and powder left after the production of charcoal. These materials are mixed with accelerators and binders to form the briquettes. As this cooking fuel is manufactured from leftover products, it is priced below kerosene and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

The type segment of the South African charcoal briquettes market is categorized into oval/pillow, coconut shell, hexagonal, round, and others, including octagonal and shisha/hookah. Among these, the oval/pillow category held the largest market share in 2019. This was because local manufacturers of charcoal briquettes find it easier to produce oval briquettes as compared to other types. Unlike hexagonal and coconut shell charcoal briquettes, the oval variant is easy to store and transport due to its smooth structure and absence of sharp edges.

At present, the South African charcoal briquettes market is highly fragmented due to the presence of several small and unorganized players. Nowadays, market players are largely focusing on the production of instant-light charcoal briquettes due to the rapid shift toward these fuels from conventional charcoal briquettes. Barbecue preparation from conventional variants is a tedious process as it requires constant monitoring, kindling, and rekindling for controlling the heat generated by them, till they burn properly and are ready to use. Continuous monitoring is essential as excessive heat may burn the food.

Thus, the surging popularity of the barbecue tradition and mounting tourist footfall will propel the usage of charcoal briquettes in South Africa.
