During an ostomy surgery, a temporary or permanent opening is made in the skin known as stoma. It is a pathway from an internal organ to the outside of stomach. A colostomy initiates in the large intestine, and an ileostomy initiates in the small intestine. They help in the passage of gas and solid waste out of the body without passing through rectum.

A urostomy help urine out without passing through the bladder. In ostomies, the waste is collected in a pouch, which is surgically located outside the body.

Most people requiring a cancer-related colostomy or ileostomy only require it for some time while the large or small intestine goes through a process of healing. But some require a permanent ostomy. A urostomy is a permanent surgery and can’t be reversed.

Living with Ostomy

An ostomy brings some changes to your life. Though, ostomy products are designed to be as expedient as it can get.

Clothing

There is generally no change in the kind of clothes you wear pre and post ostomy. Pouches fit close to the body. There is an odor-barrier film trapping foul smell. It only releases with just the emptying of the pouch. There are specialized clothes online that gives more comfort.

Daily Activities

You can do your routine activities without much hassle. People with ostomies work, play, and also have an active sexual life. Sweating might get the pouch tape to loosen. To prevent that purchasing a specialized pouch for work out can serve you well.

Bathing

The skin which is around the ostomy should be kept dry. Products containing alcohol should be avoided.  Don’t use products having an oil base, as they can be responsible for the slipping of the pouch.  Body hair surrounding the ostomy, should be shaved, preventing the pouch from sticking

Diet

In a colostomy or ileostomy, stool and gas moving into the pouch can’t be controlled. Stool and gas entering the pouch will vary on the basis of type of ostomy and diet.

Avoid foods such as, cabbage, onions, beans and spicy foods. Some foods can result in or may be hard to pass through an ostomy if not chewed well. Also, foods, that can cause constipation or dirrahea should be avoided. It is important to be hydrated, especially in case of ileostomy, because stool is waterier.

Medications

Oral medications may not be as effective in case of colostomy or ileostomy. This is since the medications absorb quite slowly. A liquid medication can work better. Take advice from a doctor about any medications, in case of ostomy.

With increasing elderly people and much improved stoma care products availability, is boosting the demand for the same. The total value of the industry will reach USD 3,882.1 million by 2030.
