Advantages of Topical Scar Treatments over Other Methods

Scars are formed during the healing procedure of the body. To restore the damaged skin and repair wounds, the body creates tissue. Accidents, burns, surgeries, acne, and disease can all cause scars. Almost everyone experiences some type of scar, whether from a surgical procedure, accident, intentional violence, or acne.

They can be treated topically, enterally, and with oral medication. There are several creams, gels, gel sheets, and oils available for scar treatment topically. Among these, creams are the highest-selling product, especially in South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, and the Southeast Asian region. This is because creams smoothen, fade, flatten, and decrease both existing and new scars, while also preventing new ones from forming.

The topical scar treatment market is growing because of the rising count of road accidents, increasing elderly population, rising burden of skin diseases, and increasing incidence of burns. According to a study in the journal Annals of Burns and Fire Disasters, the geriatric burn incidence in Vietnam was 4.2% in 2019, with over half the patients suffering from deep burn injuries.

Covid Impact on Topical Scar Treatment

The COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact on practically every industry around the globe, including the scar treatment trade. In the short term, scar treatment product demand was negatively impacted, as most non-essential hospital departments were closed. However, with the resumption of manufacturing and overseas trading operations, lifting of lockdowns, and reopening of skincare clinics, the demand for these products is likely to surge significantly in the coming years.

Different Types of Scars that People Experience

Keloid and Hypertrophic Scars

Keloids are thick, spherical, unusual clusters of scar tissue that form at the site of a skin wound, but spread beyond the lesion's borders. They are formed when a wound heals and the body creates collagen. Keloidal scars can form on any part of the body, but they are most common on the back, chest, shoulders, and earlobes.

In contrast, because hypertrophic scar formation is confined to the actual skin defect, they may be more reactive to treatment. They appear weeks after skin damage or burns. They may heal on their own, but it might take a year or more. Around 70% of the deep burn injuries arise in hypertrophic scars, according to the National Library of Medicine.

Contracture Scar

Contractures are abnormal skin conditions that arise when a large portion of the skin is injured or removed. The scar pulls the skin's edges together, resulting in a tight appearance. The shrinkage of the skin can affect the muscles, tendons, and joints, resulting in a reduction in mobility.

Atrophic and Acne Scar

Acne develops when the hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead cells, producing pimples, whiteheads, and blackheads. Acne affects people of all ages, although it is most frequent among teens. The bumps and pimples recover slowly; as one fades, others appear. Acne can create emotional trauma and skin scarring, depending on its seriousness. For instance, as per the National Library of Medicine, acne was found in 36.2% of the 693 children studied in South Korea as part of a project, and the frequency increased with age.

Atrophic scars are recessed scars that heal beneath the normal skin tissue. When the skin's ability to renew tissue fails, atrophic scars form. Scarring caused by chickenpox and severe acne is known as atrophic scarring. It can also arise after a mole is removed.

Availability of Topical Scar Treatment Products

Pharmacies

Pharmacies are widespread in developing countries, thereby making access to drugs easy for the masses. As a result, they are the largest seller of topical scar treatment products in the eastern and southeastern parts of Asia. Furthermore, the majority of the products require a dermatologist's prescription, so cannot be procured from a grocery or hypermarket/supermarket.

E-Commerce

As per CNBC, by 2026, the count of online shoppers in Southeast Asia is expected to reach 380 million. Moreover, it is one of the largest markets for smartphones, which are majorly produced in South Korea and Taiwan, with the manufacturing increasing in countries such as Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand as well. Further, as per the China Internet Network Information Center in 2021, China had around 1 billion active internet users, the highest in the world.

This, combined with the convenience e-commerce platforms provide, such as higher savings, doorstep delivery, electronic payments, and detailed product information for inter-brand comparison, has been driving the sale of all kinds of products via online shopping portals in the region. This trend grew rapidly during the pandemic, as China was among the most stringent in the lockdowns implemented.

Hence, the demand for topical scar treatments will rise due to the easy availability of medication at pharmacies and e-commerce websites and the wide occurrence of scars among all age groups and genders.
